A Titanic Success.

An in depth film review

For everything we do not remember makes us run the risk of having it repeat. This is why we must remember the titans or we could fall into and embrace habits, old and new. Remember the Titans was a true story written by Gregory Allen Howard and directed by Boaz Yakin. It is a generic movie showing the racial divide of America through an integrated football team.

The music used in the film was a standout aspect. For near all of the time it accomplished its goal of directing the audience and giving a desirable ambience. The sound was well introduced in creative ways throughout the film including characters singing and the background noise on scene. In some areas I feel the movie could have chosen better sounds to fit the mood better, the camp scenes in particular. Overall I feel it achieved the directors intention to a sizeable extent.

Scene selection played a large role of conveying the messages in the movie. In general I feel this was done well with standout scenes like the Gettisberg, locker room and the scene where Julias and Gerry developed respect for each other. These were specifically used to develop the plot plus dividing and connecting the characters. I feel the meaningfulness of when Gerry supported Julias rather than his girlfriend Kate did not live up to its full potential. In my opinion a better way this could have been done, would be if they included more scenes showing the couple had a strong bond. This could bring to life the full effect that Gerry would not stand for racial bias even if it meant disagreeing with Kate. After analysing the movie over three viewings, I think the scenes the director used were in most places great but could do with some work.

The people chosen to play the characters in Remember The Titans needed to be believable and realistic. Not only this but it was quintessential that they alter the truth to create a better effect. An impeccable example was when “Sunshine” was shown to have long hair and was homosexual. While none of that was true in real life, in the movie it portrayed the difference between himself and the team. As the story progresses you can see how the people fit their given visual stereotypes. This really helps complement the script and also shows the careful make-up and selection processes used to bring to life the depiction of the story. I did not see any direct issues with the actors chosen as they really fit their part physically and helped invigorate the scenes. In the end I feel the goal was met and they choose the best people for the job.

Overall I feel this movie was a great success in my opinion and it made me fully realise the racial burdons put on the races during that time. The factors I looked over while seeming insignificant compared to things like acting and plot were key in conveying messages that would otherwise not be possible. After reading this I hope you think about what I have said next time you remember the titans.
